Tax dispute in Arizona pits homeowners against high powered lobbyists at the Legislature. Legislat ors promise relief, but public support is thin as industry groups and seniors push for higher taxes or new revenue sources to fund education. A lone real estate agent represents homeowner interests while many residents stay disengaged.
More than 800 educators including 27 Scottsdale delegates gather at West Phoenix High School for an emergency AEA Delegate Assembly to oppose proposed state budget controls on schools. Officials warn the plan could reduce funds, raise unrest, and test education in Arizona.
A severe quake crippled Debar and damaged wide areas in Yugoslavia. Eight dead and many feared buried, 10 000 homeless, power and water cut, buildings destroyed, relief hampered by cold storms and poor communications.

Education funding would total about 80 million dollars annually, with property assessed at a percentage of cash value and required amendments before final approval.
Arvada Colorado elected council candidate Sk Ney Koon was ruled ineligible after a judge found his home was outside city limits. The controversy centers on his 13 years of municipal tax payments and voting in elections.
Senator Eugene McCarthy announced he will oppose President Johnson as an antiwar candidate in at least four Democratic presidential primaries next year. He plans to run in Wisconsin Nebraska Oregon and California with a possible entry in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. He said his goal is to challenge Johnson’s Vietnam policy and restore faith in American politics.

National Guard units nationwide are ordered to stop accepting new recruits without prior military experience until further notice to reduce strength to 400000 by June 30. The Guard stood at more than 417000 in October.

In a two injured chain reaction crash at 70th Street and Thomas Road three vehicles were involved. Dorothy Kaylor, 32, was admitted to Scottsdale Baptist in satisfactory condition. Manuel Millanez, 31, treated and released, and Ann Lou Jones, 32, involved but not hospitalized. Millanez stopped in the eastbound lane when Jones rear ended him, pushing him into Kaylor’s westbound car.
