Phelps Dodge road plan faces irreparable damage claim

U.S. Forest Service reports that a four mile access road to test wells northeast of Red Mountain in eastern Arizona would cause dust noise and water impact and scar the landscape though federal mining laws allow roads for prospecting. The study weighs environmental effects against copper industry benefits to Arizona and northern Greenlee County.

Freak wave injures three near Cape Disappointment

A freak ocean wave struck near Cape Disappointment at the mouth of the Columbia River, injuring three people. The Coast Guard counted 44 landing casualties and 11 cars engulfed by five feet of water on the north jetty parking area as two smaller waves followed the main surge. Earlier, three girls were killed when logs swept ashore north of Grays Harbor amid heavy surf.
