After Haynsworth’s defeat the Nixon administration signals a new nomination with similar conservative credentials. President Nixon said he will choose a strict constructionist caretaker of the Constitution, aiming for a nominee who interprets law rather than makes it.
The Army formally charges Lt. William L. Calley and S. Sgt. David Mitchell in connection with a March 16, 1968 massacre in Quong Nai province. About 100 villagers are alleged victims. investigation expanded to 24 other men, with 9 service members and 15 ex-GIs questioned and 75 additional interviews conducted.
United Press International reports 60 Egyptian commandos crossed the Suez Canal before dawn and attacked an Israeli tank position five miles inside Sinai. Three tanks destroyed, two damaged, several Israeli defenders killed. Israelis reportedly repelled the raid with three deaths. Arab guerrilla claim tied to Haifa oil tanks blaze. Jordan said attackers used rockets and machine guns near Waggas, south of the Sea of Galilee. No air raid casualties reported.
Scottsdale couple Ray and Isobel Evans invoked the Fifth Amendment 17 times at a Senate subcommittee inquiry into war profiteering in Vietnam. Investigator LaVern Duffy accused them of overcharging for shoddy construction and club supplies, including 700,000 nickel Christmas cards sold for a quarter. The panel said officials from the State Defense and Treasury Departments would be summoned next year.

Armed with deer rifles and a shotgun, a condemned inmate and two murder suspects escaped from Galveston County Jail, taking two women and a boy hostage. They killed a fellow escapee and wounded Deputy Sheriff Bob Williamson who walked two miles to summon help. One accomplice, Joseph William McMahon, 18, died in a ditch after being shot.
UPI reports in Phoenix that Judge William Copple ordered secret proceedings in Motorola Inc vs Fairchild Camera. The suit, filed August 1968, alleges Fairchild stole Motorola executives to learn trade secrets and seeks injunctions against further hires and use of secrets. Trial expected in about a year.
The bipartisan Council on Organization of Arizona State Government urges abolition of the State Corporation Commission and Tax Commission. Proposals include creating Revenue and Administration departments and making the state superintendent of public schools appointive. Functions split to state officers and a new Public Service Commission.
Burglars stole $20 in currency and miscellaneous items from the Paul Stone home at 8625 E Hubbell. The break in occurred between 8 45 p m Friday and 8 45 a m today after entry through a pried bedroom window.
A man entered the 7 11 at 6010 N Granite Reef Rd at 7 40 pm Friday produced a revolver and demanded the cash. He fled in a white vehicle. Police described the suspect as about 18 to 22 years old, 5 9, sandy hair, wearing a blue pullover and blue jeans.
South Vietnam dismissed reports of a 1968 massacre at Song My as totally untrue stating only 20 civilians died, caused by Viet Cong forcing residents to stay home during US artillery fire. Defense Minister Nguyen Van Vy said the probe ends there while US officials pursue their inquiry.
Firefighters responded to a blaze at 8501 E Vista Dr at 8:31 a.m. caused by a broken gas line. The fire was extinguished before arrival of fire crews, and Arizona Public Service was notified. Estimated damage set at $100.
The Maricopa County Health Department and the Central Arizona Veterinary Medical Association sponsor 31 dog clinics for rabies vaccination. A Washington area clinic runs Sunday at Fashion Square from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration costs $5. Dogs over four months must be licensed and vaccinated. Licenses expiring by December 31 will receive mailed reminders.
