Local schools discuss an annex probe by the county attorney and expansion of remedial reading at Kai Elementary. Board President Lester Maw argues staffing and funding are insufficient, saying remedial classrooms should have been planned before bond referendum costs.
The Scottsdale annexation episode moves to county level after a city council hint that further probing should be done by the county attorney or sheriff. Councilman Marron planned to draft a letter to Charles Rowan but was unavailable for comment.
Scottsdale School District will save about $29,000 by selling the $1.5 million bond issue at a 3.0361 percent interest rate via William R. Staats and Company. The district, population 84,500, had paid 3.32 percent last year. Four syndicates bid, with the high school issue at 3.2214 percent and the elementary bonds funding Mohave School and additions at Yavapai Izquierdo and Tavan. A district agreement with architect Mel C. Ensign for plans, specs, and supervision was approved.
Severe storms cut through Texas towns injuring several residents and rattling communities. The same system spawned tornadoes across the Midwest with residents from Minnesota to Michigan facing damage while New England clears heavy snow from a major snowstorm.

The Scottsdale Ministerial Association sponsors a 10 a.m. Union Service at Scottsdale High School auditorium. Holy Cross Lutheran on Hayden north of Thomas hosts a 10 a.m. service. St. Barnabas Episcopal at 6715 Mockingbird Lane holds 10 a.m. mass. Ascension Lutheran at 406 E Indian School offers a 10 a.m. service. First Church of Christ Scientist at 1232 W Indian School has an 11 a.m. service. Other churches have not announced plans.

President Eisenhower era leaders Adenauer and Kennedy conduct preliminary talks on Berlin. The pair discuss cautious exchange of concessions amid Cold War tensions. Adenauer appears rested despite a lingering cold while the discussions proceed.
The United Fund drive in Maricopa County nears completion as workers finalize last minute assignments to reach 1,668,624 dollars. Chairman Earl L. Robert H. Mattlin, former director of Crandon Park Zoo in Miami, has resigned to take a two year post as director of the Papago Park Zoo in Phoenix area. He has led Crandon Park Zoo since 1955 and previously worked in Salt Lake City and Cleveland.
