A Mohawk Airlines Fairchild turboprop flight 411 crashed on Buck Mountain in the Adirondacks near Glens Falls during a rainstorm en route from LaGuardia to Lake Gearva. Fourteen aboard were killed. rescuers reached the wreckage after hours in treacherous terrain.
L. B. Scacewater was elected director of the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association at its 20th annual Kingmart conference. Mrs. Jonnie Jo Gordon Scottsdale recreation coordinator was elected treasurer. Tom Wardell named president-elect as the association includes leaders from public and industrial agencies in Maricopa County.
Five of seven hearings were continued from this week’s council meeting. Details include approval of townhouse zoning on 9.2 acres at McDonald and Scottsdale Road with a use permit for educational buildings at Scottsdale Baptist Church. Other items were reset to December dates.

President Nixon accepted the resignations of Henry Cabot Lodge and deputy Lawrence Walsh from the Paris peace talks effective December 8. Philip Habib was named acting head of the American delegation while Lodge cited personal matters at home and the other side’s refusal to negotiate seriously.
Curtis A Quantz 12 of 4621 E Crystal Lane treated and released from Scottsdale Baptist Hospital after being struck by an auto on 8243 N Mockingbird Lane. The rider cited for no license and failing to yield. A second crash at 7 31 a m involved a Scottsdale School bus and auto on Lincoln Dr and Lost Dutchman Trail with no injuries and driver cited for improper passing.
Florence Allen 76, operator of the Florence Allen Candy Shop, died Monday in Scottsdale Baptist Hospital. Born in Cheyenne Wyoming, she began candymaking in Chicago and worked for Fannie May in Los Angeles. No survivors were listed. Services set for 10 a.m. Friday at the church.
Governor Jack Williams said he will ask the Arizona Racing Commission for a full report on dog racing operations in Arizona to assess regulation and potential legislative action. The move follows a controversy over commission members’ ties to the Funk brothers, who run all six tracks, and a request by greyhound breeders to revoke licenses.
City council canvass confirms John Driggs maintains outright mayoral lead by 133 votes after a machine recheck. Milton Graham loses one vote. George Miller gains 200, Henry Brodersen 100, Gary Klahr 28. Six council seats remain for December 9 election.
Tickets for the annual Scottsdale Policemen's Ball Friday night remain available from Scottsdale Police officers. Proceeds go to aid families of officers injured or killed on duty. Entertainment features the Tommy Reed band and Toni Lee Scott.
