Officer Shoots Convict After Motel Surrender
State prison escapee Wayne Griffith was shot in the spine by Detective Capt. Richard Harrington as he prepared to surrender outside the Illini Motor Court in Phoenix. Griffith, 32, had escaped Florence prison after tying a fellow inmate and was in critical condition at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Police surrounded the Grand Avenue motel after a tip placed him there.

Vessel In Call For Aid Near Key West Dry Tortugas

Snipers Prowl Caracas Amid Pro Castro Strike Call
Terrorist snipers and saboteurs struck Caracas as the pro Castro underground urged a general strike. A civilian was killed, two policemen wounded, and three cars burned in scattered sections. City Studies Acquisition of Park Area In Wash
City manager Ken Williams asked the council to authorize negotiating a lease purchase for a park site in Indian Bend Wash between 38 and 39 acres east of Hayden Road and south of Jackrabbit Road. Tomorrow at 10 a.m. the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors hosts a public hearing on a proposed 115.4 million county wide flood control district including the Indian Bend Wash project in Scottsdale.
