BEST Ticket Named for Scottsdale City Primary
A slate led by Councilman John Woudenberg titled the Balanced Experienced Scottsdale Ticket BEST will appear on the February 18 primary ballot. Incumbents Parker Caywood Clayton and Hunter head a seven man slate with newcomer attorney Joseph Meier and a seventh unnamed candidate. The release cites plans to pursue efficient economics amid Scottsdale growth. Other announced independents include Pelusi Worley Cross. Schrader and Meacham left the scene. The Scottsdale Citizens Committee plans its own slate next week as petitions with 289 to 579 signatures are due between November 20 and December 20.

Robert J. Clark, 70, of Scottsdale Arizona, keeps a 60 year old Tennessee Walker named Duke hitched to a buggy for rides several times weekly. He notes motorists are more courteous to him in a buggy, and he hopes more horse drawn vehicles would boost Scottsdale's Western town image. Clark retired five years ago after 17 years in Arizona vehicle businesses and moved from Phoenix seven months ago. He often appears in parades and pageants with his buggy and has won several first prizes, sometimes as a country doctor with a stork prop and a sign reading Doctor Please Hurry.

Yale Professor Barghoorn Released and Expelled from Soviet Union
Yale professor Frederick Barghoorn was released after 16 days in prison on espionage charges and expelled to London following Soviet Foreign Minister Gromyko’s announcement. He arrived in London aboard a British Airways jet, meeting U.S. embassy officials, planning to continue to the United States.

Murder Hearing Began In Soape Murder Case
Georgia Mae Marchman testified in Tucson on a preliminary murder hearing for Leo David and Robert Lee Sims. She said they lured Glendell Soape to a dirt road where Sims and Davis beat and kicked him. Soape, 26, of Scottsdale, was found dead May 23 in a Sahuarita wheat field. Soape reportedly carried about $600. none found on the body. Marchman, a convicted prostitute, said she feared Sims and fled. She gave a six page Dallas statement and is held as a material witness. The hearing adjourned to Monday.

Paul Frances Andre 63 of 6838 E Virginia Ave died early today apparently of a stroke. Scottsdale police said he died in his sleep. his wife reported the death at 7:35 a.m. In Phoenix a car stolen from in front of the Ka china Theatre last night was driven to 88th Street and abandoned. it belonged to Bill Gaylard of 9022 N 18th Dr Phoenix and was found at 11:45 p.m. by Patrolman Hugh Carpenter. The car had ignition wire damage.

A Scottsdale man hit and killed 53-year-old Edgar Simon Pesis of Mesa while returning from a Chandler high school football game. Pesis died at Mesa Southside Hospital after walking into the path of Dean K. Zahnter’s car on U S 87 near Mesa. Mrs. Zahnter suffered facial injuries.
