Nixon orders faster Vietnam troop withdrawals

President Nixon ordered speeded U S troop withdrawals from Vietnam removing 45 000 more men in December and January while keeping a residual force in Indochina until a negotiated settlement is reached. He warned prisoners of war could be released only as part of talks and faced sharp Senate criticism over lingering U S presence.

Woman Fends Off Attacker In Car Near East McDowell

Mary Jane Cassidy reported a man hid in her back seat at Scotch Mist on Scottsdale Road and pulled a gun as she drove. After a struggle she seized the weapon and fired, wounding the suspect in the leg. police found blood and tissue in the abandoned car. The description: slim white male in his 30s, about 6 feet, 150 pounds, brown hair and eyes.

Scientist-astronaut Schmitt to speak at Apollo program dinner

Dr Harrison Schmitt the first scientist selected for a moon mission will headline an Apollo program dinner at Mountain Shadows at 7 pm. The talk caps the Arizona Air Force Association annual convention events at Rodeway Inn on Indian School Road Phoenix. The convention is hosted by Phoenix and Tucson chapters and features tours golf tennis shopping and a visit to Loretta Young's home.

Ruth K. Ditty 66 a Scottsdale resident for 15 years died Friday in a Mesa hospital. She moved from Cleveland Ohio and lived at 6926 E Cheney Rd. Fire damages an apartment in Chicago area home

A blaze causing about $100 in damage broke out Friday at 5 p.m. in the apartment of Betty Berman at 3326 North 66th Place. Officials said improper clearance around a gas water heater started the fire.

Congress to Study Transportation Goals After Interstate Finish

Scottsdale YWCA Offers Three Spanish Classes

The Scottsdale YWCA at 3019 N Civic Center Plaza will launch three six week conversational Spanish courses next week as part of its adult educational program. Beginners may choose Wednesday morning 10 30 to noon or Tuesday evening 6 30 to 8. Intermediate classes meet Monday morning 10 30 to noon or Tuesday night 8 to 9 30. Advanced sessions run Wednesday 7 to 8 p.m.

The Sister City Committee will meet Wednesday to plan a December trip to Alamos Sonora Mexico. Residents will drive and tour scenic areas in Sonora. Alamos, 500 miles south of Scottsdale, is a 5,000 resident town with 250 year old homes being restored.
