Edward M. Kennedy celebrated his Senate victory with about 1,500 Democratic workers at Cape Cod. The party featured large food quantities and long handshaking lines with Kennedy, his wife Joan, and his running mates, highlighting his political strength.
GOP candidate John H. Chafee holds a 68 vote lead over Democrat John A. Notte Jr. as 6,676 absentee ballots remain uncounted. Navy and other service members must vote by Nov. 21, with a board review adding one vote to Chafee's total for a preliminary 160,611 to 160,543 edge.
Republican Gov. John H. Reed defeated Democrat Maynard C. Dolloff by 621 votes in the Maine gubernatorial election. The official tally shows Reed 146,742 to Dolloff 146,121 after all 631 precincts reported. Dolloff has requested a recount.
