Price of seat on Exchange plummets

AP analysis notes NYSE seat value fell from 515000 in 1969 to 50000 this week. Brokers and investors face a cooler market as participation wanes and commissions shrink. Regulators push for broader access and a unified central market, casting doubt on seat value and Big Board membership limits.

USDA ups corn crop forecast as retail sales slide

The USDA raised this year's corn crop forecast by 3 percent to a record 6.06 billion bushels, helping keep meat and dairy prices down. Retail food costs are seen rising about 3 percent this year and into next summer, while October retail sales rose only 0.3 percent after seasonal adjustment and September sales were revised lower. Railroads seek a 4 percent general freight rate increase.
