Smoking During Pregnancy Linked to Lighter Babies
Dr Paul B Underwood Jr of Charleston reports at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists that smoking by expectant mothers correlates with lower birth weights. A survey of 4,440 women across 16,000 pregnancies found heavier mothers tended to have heavier infants, with more than a pack a day producing smaller babies. He notes nutritional factors may also play a role and that abortion rates rose among smokers, though stillbirth rates were unchanged.
