Four members of the Valley rock group Rose had charges dismissed in Scottsdale City Court over a permit mix up. They were arrested Oct 30 near Get It On clothing store for playing in a no parking zone in front of Kiva Theater amid volume complaints.
Public health inspector Norman Buckley reports Warrington’s mice infestation rose 33 percent as domestic cats become pampered with luxury canned foods. He blames the overfed cats for not chasing mice, noting the pets’ frequent tin meals reduce their hunting drive.
CHANDLER The city council voted 7-0 to conduct an open investigation of the police department. Mayor George Nader and three councilmen questioned witnesses, while City Manager Gale Christy deferred action on firing Police Chief William Louthan. Nader said the probe showed Louthan should be fired for the good of the city. A crowd of more than 400 filled the chambers as Nader denounced mob rule in Chandler.
Police report a youth about 16 to 18 fell through a roof vent at 7155 East Main Street around 6 40 p m while attempting a burglary but escaped with help from a friend. Larry Sussman at Boca Grande Land Development Co was nearby but could not stop the suspect. The youth wore a red and yellow football shirt and blue jeans. A tape recorder valued at 170 and 3 in cash were reported stolen from the Chew Ling Fong residence between 4 30 p m and 10 30 p m Monday. Officers said a bedroom window at 6149 East Cambridge was pried open to gain entry. A flute and case worth 125 were reported stolen from the Saguaro High School band room between Oct 27 and Oct 28.
Two Scottsdale high schools Saguaro and Coronado earned superior ratings at ASU Band Day. Scottsdale High School received an excellent designation as thirty bands with 2,400 members joined the ASU Sun Devil band for the annual event.
A 19 year old man Gordon Powell is held in city jail after Monday night arrest on suspicion of the October 25 rape of a Scottsdale woman in her westside apartment. Arraignment pending in Scottsdale Justice Court after victim identified him at Super X store. Police found eight outstanding traffic citations.
The Pay Board voted 10 to 5 to hold wage increases to about 5.5 percent and bar most workers from retroactive raises during the 90 day freeze. It allows pre freeze contracts to take effect unchanged when controls lift midnight Saturday. AFL-CIO President George Meany objects as unions mull next steps in Miami.
Police report 27 people died in a head on crash between a bus and a truck on the Friendship Highway near Korat in Northeast Thailand. The accident occurred Monday, causing multiple injuries and disrupting travel on a major route built with American aid.
