West Berlin police, outnumbered by about 16 to 1, battled around 200 Communist police using armored cars and water cannons along a 200 yard border stretch at Wilhelmsruh yard. Tear gas grenades exploded as the fence built by the Communists was toppled by Western officers. A second clash occurred at another border section.
A wind-driven brush fire in the Santa Monica Mountains above Sherman Oaks prompted a minor emergency. By noon at least 45 expensive homes were destroyed as residents evacuated and authorities urged water-wetting to protect roofs. Water-bombers joined land units to halt spread amid 65 mph gusts and dry conditions.
Dennis Mondhink, 18, and Ronald Mondhink, 16, brothers from Scottsdale, failed to return from a weekend deer hunt near Seven Springs north of Phoenix. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office sent a unit to assist in the search for the youths, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Perley Mondhink. Ronald attends Scottsdale High School.

President Kennedy welcomed Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in Newport Rhode Island to start talks on world affairs. Nehru arrived by air at Quonset Point and greeted Kennedy after traveling aboard the Honey Fitz across Narragansett Bay.
Residents on eight streets seek 33 new street lights by January with petitions exceeding 51 percent. If approved, Salt River Project and Arizona Public Service would fund about $115 monthly. Also on agenda Trader Vic's curved beams, and two zoning changes at Second Street Marshall and MacDonald Dr Scottsdale Road.

Washington accuses Moscow of using its nuclear weapons tests to intimidate the Free World. The U S statement responds to a Soviet warning that Russia could extend its test series if atmospheric testing resumes by the United States.

Two former Arizona Savings & Loan officials James R. Heron and Chuck O. Lee were arraigned in Maricopa County Superior Court on 10 charges including embezzlement and perjury. A Phoenix attorney filed a public service franchise application for water service north and east of Scottsdale. Harry Cavanaugh represents the McDowell Mountain Water Company seeking to serve sections at the foothills of the McDowell Mountains. The matter will be heard by county supervisors at 10 a.m. on November 27.
The five justice Arizona Supreme Court will hear Tempe and Scottsdale in a dispute over sewer rights. Scottsdale plans a 931000 plant inside Tempe borders while Tempe seeks to halt construction and enforce zoning. Corbett argues revenue bonds are not illegal and funds exist to build it. A temporary writ has blocked Tempe from interference.
The Scottsdale School Board approved a fourth classroom building the stadium and tennis courts for Coronado High School. Dr. John L. Ashe says only the gymnasium and auditorium remain with gym completion expected this year and the auditorium due in February. Coronado will host Peoria in the first home football game on the new field Friday night.
The Supreme Court fixed January 8 for arguments in Arizona v California over Colorado River water. Master Simon Rifkind of New York proposed the division plan now accepted by the court. Nevada Utah New Mexico and the United States will participate. The 16 hour schedule allocates time among all litigants.
Norman Brinker of the Scottsdale Polo Club says plans for a $3,000 polo field at Indian School Road were dropped in favor of a permanent grass site. The club plans to purchase land with a grandstand and stables to boost Scottsdale, aiming to join a western polo league with a Chicago team next winter. The club, formed less than a year ago with 50 members, will play at Mickle ranch this summer and callers can reach Bob Dwyer at WH 5 5585 for joining information.
