The Scottsdale school board meets at Hopi school to plan presenting a $5.9 million bond issue for elementary and high school expansion. The election is set for December 11, with Hopi School at 5110 E Lafayette Boulevard as the meeting site.
Eleven German miners trapped in the Mathilde iron mine after a flood were found alive 11 days into the ordeal. They signaled from a 12 by 6 by 28 foot chamber via a six inch drill shaft and a field telephone, reporting water dripping and corpses nearby while surviving on damp water and tin helmets. Adolf Herbst, 20, showed delirium but calmed after speaking with his fiancée.
A 24 year old woman allegedly used a Carte Blanche card to run up a 206 bill at Trader Vic s in Scottsdale on Oct 12 for a party of 35. The card was later reported lost or stolen by the credit agency on Oct 18. Police also recovered turquoise and silver stolen from a Scottsdale silversmith, found by Lewis Grill at 8018 E Thomas Rd. A 17 year old was arrested for the burglary last week.
In Saigon the victorious military leaders announced a program for South Viet Nam promising freedom of the press and religion and a return to constitutional government. The junta sought to prevent mobs from desecrating Diem and Nhu’s bodies while outlining internal reforms including allowing all non Communist parties to operate within national defense security and transferring power to a popularly elected government when feasible.
Scottsdale Parks and Recreation Director L B Spacewater announced a three page survey to gauge resident preferences for arts and crafts clubs dancing nature outings literature music sports and games dramatics and special events. Two 11 year old girls Edith Geer and Marina Kiser died when their grandparents car was struck by a Southern Pacific freight train in Tucson on a Sunday night. The grandparents George and Doris Gray were critically injured. Police said the train lights and horn were active but the driver did not see the car due to a obstructing house corner.
Federal prosecutors open a trial in Houston accusing Ambrosia Mineral Co. officers George Mellen Paul McDaniel Calvin Allen and Hinton Haynes of fixing a false market for Ambrosia shares. The scheme allegedly involved inter-share trading on the San Francisco Mining Exchange driving the price from 1.25 to 3 in 10 days despite losses.
Madame Nhu, wife of Ngo Dinh Nhu, told the U S State Department she seeks guarantees for her safety on returning to Vietnam to care for her husband and children. She asked the American Embassy in Saigon to assist and offered sending her three children to Rome via Los Angeles if needed. Her husband and brother-in-law were killed in the coup that toppled the Diem regime.
A foreign exchange student argues he was only 35 when stopped for 55 in a 35 mph zone. Patrolman Paul Smith explains the law. the student then admits lying about speed. The officer ultimately issues no ticket, as confirmed by Police Chief Walter Nemetz.
