The October wholesale price index rose eight tenths of a percent the largest since April. Farm product prices climbed 2.4 percent led by livestock fruits vegetables grains and oilseeds while cars and trucks boosted the increase. The index stood at 196.3 with a 12 month rise of 5.9 percent.
Army Corps official Will Worthington proposed raising Roosevelt Dam by 15 feet and rebuilding Horseshoe Dam to capture snowmelt runoff. The plans would cost about 50 million dollars and could add 200 000 acre feet of groundwater recharge annually, potentially two thirds of CAP’s 300 000 acre feet. He noted legal changes would be needed to ensure water rights aren’t lost to groundwater.
FBI agent Jerry Lee Hall, 31, arrested in Phoenix for making obscene telephone calls to a young woman. He was taken from a phone booth, booked and released on his own recognizance as the Phoenix FBI office began an administrative inquiry led by special agent Leon Gaskill. The investigation traced the final call to the booth after a series of obscene calls were taped.
John Huerta director of the Arizona Department of Economic Security since 1975 resigned after a conversation with Gov. Wesley Bolin. Bolin said he needs his own man to head the department and accepted Huerta’s resignation. Acting director Ed Crowley will take over.
Motorola engineers say affordable home computers in the 600 to 1200 dollar range will spread to American households. By 1990 many homes may run house functions and manage finances with integrated systems through increasingly compact, software rich machines.
Following months of delay in remodeling and moving to Maricopa County's new Scottsdale auto license office, the expanded Miller Plaza facility opened this week. The three extra workers and longer hours improve service, which previously faced long lines and outdoor waits during hot months. The office is located at 7624 E. Indian School Rd., Suite 118.
Senate Democratic Leader Robert Byrd aligned with President Carter warning that partisanship endangers a genuine chance for a permanent Middle East peace settlement in our lifetime. He echoed Carter in responding to Senator Baker’s charge that the president risks Israel’s security and world peace.
An American passenger aboard an El Al jumbo jet died when cabin pressure was lost over Yugoslavia. The pilot dived the aircraft from 33 000 feet to 14 000 feet. The victim was identified as W C Holder of Llano Texas. Cause of death was not known.
Band leader Guy Lombardo remained in critical condition at Methodist Hospital in Houston six weeks after heart artery surgery. He is under the care of renowned surgeon Dr. Michael DeBakey who operated on his aorta September 23. Lombardo was discharged October 18 and re-admitted last week.
In Greece heavy rains caused floods killing at least 25 in Athens and Piraeus. An earthquake with magnitude between 5 and 6 shocked northern Greece southern Bulgaria and southeastern Yugoslavia with no damage reports. In New Castle Pennsylvania a fire at a Holiday Inn killed at least four and injured others. In Rio de Janeiro a bus crash killed three tourists from Washington state including a 50th wedding anniversary celebration couple.
Senators from 11 Western states complained to two members of President Carter's Cabinet about proposed increases in federal grazing fees. The Senate defeated a Republican backed effort to retain the traditional 50 50 split in Social Security financing. The plan would have used an equal tax-rate increase for employers and employees to aid Social Security.
A public hearing to review Camelback Hospital 's certificate of need to build a 74 bed satellite psychiatric facility is set for Tuesday at 7 p m in Camelback Hospital 5055 N 34th St The initial phase calls for 42 beds by 1979 20 more by 1983 and 2 by 1985 A citizens committee said 163 additional psychiatric beds would be needed in Maricopa Pinal and Gila counties by 1983 The agency board accepted the recommendation and will guide Camelback's proposal with a subcommittee using the recommendations as bed plan guidelines The plan also notes no general hospital bed increases through 1983
