Fendler defense argues honesty in thrift fund transfer case
In Phoenix, opening statements in a federal trial defend Robert Fendler founder of U S and Lincoln Thrift Associations against charges of grand theft and conspiracy. Fendler’s lawyer says he never took profits from a 1.5 million asset transfer used to form the American Bank of Commerce and that directors approved the move. Bill Hawkins, representing the cemetery, said the offer would be reviewed but conditions include stopping repeated public improvement demands. City Council member Richard Campana urged the city to cover legal costs for transferring grave sites to right of way and for Green Acres to dedicate the right of way while paying relocation costs, citing ongoing requests for Hayden right of way with each expansion.
