Israeli Prime Minister Levi Eshkol called for a mutual troop withdrawal from the Sinai border to avert a broader war and urged international action to curb sabotage and terror. He cited Syrians as fueling border infiltrations that heighten regional tensions.
A large fire in Apache National Forest burned about 8100 acres of pine and grass land 20 miles south of Quemada New Mexico. One firefighter, Rolfe Hoyer of Springer ville, died. In Los Angeles the Colorado River Board of California opposed Colorado River legislation backed by Arizona and the Johnson Administration, endorsing the Kuchel bill.
Charles Schmid Jr., 24, pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the death of Aileen Rowe, 15, ending his Tucson trial. Judge set June 2 for sentencing. Schmid already on death row for two earlier slayings.
Police used tear gas and clubs as Communist led mobs caused the worst rioting in 125 years of British rule. The government banned all unauthorized demonstrations and public meetings with immediate effect. At least 65 arrests and many injuries followed clashes near the governor’s palace and main courthouse.
Scottsdale will use the quick take statute to obtain 12 parcels needed for a new city hall and library. Condemnation suits target nine owners, with deposits set for May 31 hearings. Project budget is 2.9 million dollars, with work projected to start December 1 and finish in August 1968.
A blaze and explosions gutted Belgium's largest department store amid America Week festivities in Brussels. Police cited sabotage and gas explosions on the fourth floor triggering rapid spread. patrons fled as flames surged from upper levels in a chaotic, deadly scene.
Willis Carroll Kelly of Scottsdale faces a preliminary hearing in Scottsdale before Justice Harold Holcomb. The case involves an alleged $50 000 marijuana sale after a February arrest by State Narcotics agents in the Fashion Square area. The original possession charge was dismissed for lack of proof. Hearing set for 3 30 p.m. today.
A plane taking off caused heat that raised nearby office building temperatures by five degrees. A survivor, a salesgirl, recalled hearing explosions and misattributing them to a past event. Police reported at least 15 killed and more than 100 treated for burns among residents of the old city.
Residents along the east section of Shea Blvd will meet at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Taliesin West with county and city officials to discuss development wishes. Mayor Bud Tims and County Supervisor B W Burns are invited. a property owners committee to advise Scottsdale and county officials on needs will be formed to oppose strip zoning.
The mayor and city council plan to rank 43 capital improvement projects to be completed over two years. City Manager Bill Donaldson urged ordering the list, while the adopted $4.9 million tentative budget includes $805,000 for projects such as traffic signals and fire hydrants to extend fire protection. The informal meeting starts at 8 p.m. at city hall 60 W. Indian School Rd.
Publisher Jonathan Marshall announced The Progress will publish Mondays through Fridays during the summer months and resume Saturday editions for fall varsity coverage. The paper will keep a weekly church news page on Fridays with copy due by 5 p.m. Wednesday at the office.
Five residents were injured in three separate auto accidents Sunday in Scottsdale. Robert Brodeur, 23, was hurt when his car hit a power pole at 68th Street and Pinchot and was released from Scottsdale Baptist Hospital. Buddie Coleman, 29, and David Cass, 11, suffered minor injuries when their vehicle collided with a car driven by Jerry Robinson at Thomas and Hayden Roads. Coleman and Cass were treated and released, Robinson cited for failure to yield. Sandra Zahnter, 16, and her mother Cleo were injured when their car was struck at Indian School and Hayden by John Gallagher, 16. both treated and released, Gallagher cited for failing to stop at a red light.
The House Appropriations Committee votes 1.6 billion more for federal school aid and tells H E W to ease desegregation enforcement in Southern districts. The report notes department overreach and urges equal, lawful enforcement across states as negotiations continue on a separate 3.5 billion expansion plan. The bill covers the 1967-68 period with floor action expected later this week.
