Domingo Martinez aged 23 drowned Sunday evening while swimming across Vista del Camino Lake near the new park south of McDowell Bend Wash. Judge James Mitchell of Scottsdale Justice Court found the death accidental and no inquest planned.
About 25 elected and appointed Scottsdale officials will travel to Yuma for the 44th annual Conference of Arizona Cities and Towns, running through Friday. Speakers include Gov. Williams and Thomas Bradley of Los Angeles with a panel on regional policy making and a discussion on municipal parks and recreation.
U.S. District Judge George H. Boldt ruled that evidence used to subpoena Leslie Bacon before a federal grand jury was legal even if it included wiretaps because she has not been charged with a crime. He denied her motion to quash the subpoena and rejected a stay of the grand jury proceedings.
The Hohokam School PTA will sponsor a panel on the teachers strike at 7 30 p m Friday in the school cafetorium. Participants include school board member James Wellington Ken Moore a National Association member and George Story of the Scottsdale Federation of Teachers. Questions from the floor will be accepted and a babysitting service will be provided.
A 500 dollar AK diamond and pearl ring was taken from Diane Hanson at 2615 North 68th Place between 11 30 am and 4 15 pm Tuesday. The thief pried open a rear sliding door and searched a bedroom then fled with the ring.
Mrs. Afton Stewart, a Hopi School special reading teacher, was elected corresponding Logendth for the newly formed EKNE. Dr. Mary E. Bell of Arizona State University's Elementary Education Department was elected president. Attendees included Mrs. Frances Greenwald, president of the Arizona Kindergarten Association, a Scottsdale teacher, as the group aims to unify and strengthen the elementary program through eighth grade.
In a Senate speech Senator Barry Goldwater argues the European monetary crisis has damaged American pride and prestige. He decries past administrations for fiscal irresponsibility and says attempts to reassure on floating currencies cannot hide the decline in U S prestige as the dollar weakens and the U S backs away from leading the free world air transport sector.
The 997th Aviation Company of the Army National Guard seeks 42 pilots and 44 enlisted specialists after converting from an Air Ambulance to an Assault Helicopter Company. Maj. James H. Cowan says priority goes to prior service personnel, with special consideration for Vietnam veterans. Applicants may contact 1st Sgt. Dale Swenson at Papago Army Air Field weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 30 p.m.
Vincent Matthews reports from Canton area on Hsiang Hua People's Commune where barefoot doctors train locally and work half in hospital half in fields. He notes harvest abundance, water management by a giant rubber tire dam, and a strong cultural revolution tone with praise of Mao.
At the Elysee Palace President Georges Pompidou and his wife hosted the annual government dinner. Two wives wore matching shorts under long evening gowns, drawing attention among attendees. Mrs Chalaridon and Mrs Malaud were noted for their outfits while Pompidou reportedly complimented Mrs Chalaridon.
The Scottsdale Jaycees will honor 26 outstanding junior citizens and name six top award winners at a Junior Citizenship Awards Banquet Friday in the Coronado High School cafeteria. A panel will judge personal achievement community service and interviews. speakers include Bill Close former Scottsdale School Board president and TV newsman. Prizes are sponsored by the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce Hitching Post Car Wash and Straw Hat Pizza Palace.
