The department forecasts 500 million to 600 million bushels of spring-planted wheat and an overall 1976 wheat output near two billion bushels, slightly below last year’s 2.1 billion. Corn could total six to 6.7 billion bushels, up from 5.8 billion. Winter wheat, about three quarters of supply, was hit by drought but a five state survey reduced feared losses.
Two witnesses told a Senate committee they were denied opportunity to speak as the House repealed a Medicaid measure. The hearing reviewed proposed amendments tying county contributions to indigent care costs, capping spending, and delaying front money with a two month deferment. Federal funding would cover 60 percent or $40 million.
President Ford is expected to sign a bill restructuring the Federal Election Commission and releasing federal funds for presidential candidates. Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska said the signing would occur later today after a meeting with Ford.
A tank of ammonia exploded during a freeway crash in Houston, triggering a pileup of eight cars. Four people died and 17 others were overcome by fumes as police closed two freeways and evacuated nearby buildings. Inhalation of ammonia can be fatal.

Bolivian ambassador to France Gen Joaquin Zenteno Anaya aged 53 was shot dead in Paris as he walked to his car. The envoy led Bolivian forces that tracked and killed Ernesto Guevara in 1967. A group calling itself the Che Guevara Brigade claimed responsibility for the attack.
IRS Commissioner Donald Alexander told a House subcommittee that notifying all 11,000 taxpayers and groups involved in improper tax files is unnecessary undesirable and not cost effective. He argued against the congressional proposals during the hearing.
A man on Knoxville's main business street pulled a rifle from a box and opened fire during lunch hour. Three people were killed and two wounded as witnesses described the gunman standing and turning as the shots rang out, likened by a nurse to a bomb exploding.
Tonight’s third meeting at the Ft. McDowell tribal council hall will see no restrictions on attendance according to Tribal Chairman Clinton Patten. U S Bureau of Reclamation officials will discuss impacts of the Orme Dam project and Verde River flooding on the Ft. McDowell territory. Last week nonmembers were restricted from attending, a claim denied by officials and tribal members.
City staff recommends stopping grass covered medians and switching to desert or natural landscaping. Proposed projects include Camelback Road and Butherus Drive medians with estimated costs 5 000 and 58 000 respectively. Remaining medians to be completed next year at about 40 000.
Carefree co founder K T Palmer 77 was found dead in his car near Scottsdale. Deputies say overdose suspected and autopsy ordered to determine exact cause. Palmer helped establish Carefree with Tom Darlington, moving to Arizona in 1920 and practicing law before joining the community project.
The Scottsdale Charros report a break even on spring training income after a reduced schedule and six cancellations due to a players owners contract dispute. Net profit fell short of prior years, forcing the group to scale back community projects and rely more on manpower.
