Orme Dam meeting closed to outsiders sparks BIA clash

At Ft McDowell tribal offices a meeting on the Central Arizona Project and Orme Dam was ordered closed to outsiders by BIA official Sam Hilliard and tribal police. Tribal leaders and residents urged openness while Patten pledged future sessions would be open despite directives.

Unpredictable storm shuts roads across Scottsdale and Phoenix

A heavy storm dumped record May rainfall in Scottsdale Phoenix and Paradise Valley with .84 and .91 inches respectively. Three tornadoes were spotted nearby but caused no damage while widespread flooding forced road closures and power outages. Police announced streets were reopening as floodwaters receded.

AIM Leader Russell Means Shot In South Dakota Incident

American Indian Movement leader Russell Means and fellow AIM member John Thomas were shot at a housing area on a nearby Indian reservation. James Weddell, 19, and Michael Weston, 18, both of Wagner, fled the scene after the shooting. Both Means and Thomas underwent surgery at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton and were listed in satisfactory condition.

Pilot Hikes Desert After 4th in 3000-Mile Derby

Rudy Alleman of Richland Washington placed fourth after the first leg of a 3000 mile glider race from Los Angeles to Washington DC. He landed near Wenden Arizona about 80 miles northwest of Phoenix and 110 miles from Carefree thunderstorm forced six pilots to end short of the goal. Paul Bible of Lancaster California also landed near Wickenburg after flying about 232.5 miles. Alleman reported about 196 miles flown.
