Robert Dent and Ila Faye Dent led police on a six hour pursuit starting with a traffic stop near Anahuac, Texas. Dent was killed by a sharpshooter during an ambush at a rural Bryan area home while Ila Faye Dent was captured unharmed. Crone, a witness, described the confrontation and threats during the escape.
Former Arizona Senate leader David Kret predicts Governor Williams will convene a special session to revise school laws. He notes party leaders may meet after the Republican Governors Conference. Congress says a session could be needed to avoid more than $8 million in federal aid loss due to conflicts between state and federal enrollment rules.
Thieves took about $2 in coins from the residence of F. R. Hanrahan at 2831 North 71st Street. police report entry between 3 PM and 10:45 PM Friday with the home ransacked but only coins removed.
An abandoned gunpowder factory exploded killing at least four people and wounding 85 to 110. Army guards sealed the site and feared additional explosives might be buried under debris as authorities cleaned up Friday.
University of Arizona senior Timothy Puntenney of Paradise Valley received the Robert L. Nugent Award at the Senior Breakfast for academic achievement citizenship and contributions to the UA. Puntenney, president of the Student Union Activities Board, will graduate in May with a BS in food and dairy technology and holds memberships in Bobcats Blue Key Zeta Delta Traditions Shi Gamma Delta and other groups. He is a Scottsdale High School graduate and the son of Mr and Mrs Williams H Puntenney.
Kenneth Kummerlowe, 42, of Scottsdale was held without bond on a first degree murder charge in the slaying of Saree Aim AG in Mesa. Police say Kummerlowe killed the victim in an east side motel, then dismembered the body and hid parts in batches of ice chests. Investigators noted possible hammer blows and are probing a motive. the suspect’s wife Mary, 33, said she and Kummerlowe knew each other from AiResearch Manufacturing years ago.
An 18 year old Scottsdale girl sustained a minor injury as a passenger when Edward Lehrmitt 18 of 525 N 76th St drove north on Scottsdale Rd and hit a road delineator then struck a traffic island. Lehrmitt was cited for failure to control his vehicle. Kathy Smith 18 of 6743 Belleview also suffered injuries.
President Nixon outlines a package named The Postal Revenue and Offensive Intrusion and Sexually Oriented Mail Act of 1969. It would ban sending sex oriented ads to under 18, create a public list for opt outs, impose fines up to 50 000 and five years in prison for first offenses, and justify funding via package rate hikes.
United Press reports a weekend of unrest at multiple campuses. At Queens College New York a clash between black and white students occurred while Indiana faced a $600000 fire damage attributed to arson. Purdue reported a $500 damage from a firebomb at the agriculture building as police mobilized.
Joseph H. DeMoe an Illinois electrician who worked 45 years for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad died Friday at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital. He moved to Scottsdale in 1999 from Milwaukee, his birthplace. He is survived by his wife Caroline a daughter Mrs. William Hardill a sister Mrs. Alice Mack in Scottsdale and two brothers in Milwaukee and two grandchildren. Visitation is 6:10 to 9:30 p.m. tonight at Messinger Mortuary 1 S E Indian School. Services and cremation will be in Milwaukee.

Fire crews responded to a pickup belonging to Mack Taylor at 8138 E Amelia on Scottsdale's east side with the vehicle in flames by 7:39 pm. Additional blazes included pile logs behind 1200 EB, an alley fire behind 7521 E Heatherbrae causing sixteen dollars, a fence fire behind 8555 E Rose Ln, a grass fire at 6736 N Desert Hill Dr, and another grass fire on 82nd St E McDowell.
