Rusk assures no U S armed Cuba intervention plan

Construction Tops One Million in City Permits

City building permits issued in April total $1,112,982, including five commercial permits for the Bank of Scottsdale at $323,000 and 52 residential permits totaling $774,600. A new apartment permit is $4,500 and five swimming pools amount to $20,882, with miscellaneous car ports and garages at $1,425. The first residential batch under the bulk production ordinance was issued to Allied Construction Company for 35 homes in Hidden Village and 16 in the Arcadia district.

Youngster Hurt In Slide Fall At Supai School Yard

Harvey Redding, 11, of 325 West Continental, was admitted to Good Samaritan Hospital after a fall from a 10 foot high slide in the Supai school yard. He is listed in good condition today. He was playing with two companions when the accident occurred yesterday afternoon.

Spooner to Become Arcadia High Assistant Principal

Leonard T Spooner 50 year old principal of Prescott Senior High will become assistant principal at Arcadia High next year, announced by Dr John L Ashe superintendent. Spooner a Prescott graduate served in the navy 1942 to 1945, has MS from USC, taught history and social science, counseled and directed athletics, and started as Prescott principal in 1956. He is married to Lucretia and they have two children. He will assume Arcadia duties July 1 at an annual salary of 8500 dollars.

Fire crews respond to two trash fires in Scottsdale

Scottsdale firemen were called to two simultaneous alarms Saturday evening at 8:45 p.m. Small trash fires were reported at the Pancake House and at the Circle K Market on South Scottsdale Road. No damage occurred.

Kennedy signs controversial relief bill to boost jobless areas

President Kennedy signed a $451 million in spirit areas bill aimed at reducing chronic unemployment. He called it an important step toward putting the jobless to work in distressed regions. He named William Batt Jr. of Pennsylvania as administrator of the program under Secretary Luther Hodges.

Scottsdale to get permanent substation on McDowell Road

Scottsdale post office plans a permanent mail substation on the north side of McDowell Road opposite Papago Parkway entrance. The 4,700 square foot facility will expand downtown space by about 50 percent. Private developers will build and lease the structure to the post office, with bids to be called soon.
