Scottsdale advisory committee outlines a 13 million bond plan over five years funded by a 15 cent per 100 valuation tax hike. The plan targets Kiva Mohave overcrowding, shifts to a K6 2 4 system, reduces student teacher ratios, and funds six middle schools and new high school site along with facilities upgrades at Arcadia Coronado and Saguaro high schools.
An attorney general opinion rules that districts cannot use state aid for five year olds in pre first grade programs even if labeled as first grade. The ruling follows a Court of Appeals and Supreme Court decision limiting state aid to programs under 240 minutes daily. Scottsdale faced about 330000 in costs after a court halt on funding and remaining 660000 in aid for the year was frozen.
City Manager Bill Donaldson announced initial bids for a new park building near Coronado High School came in under the 150000 budget. Scottsdale Construction Co led with 122800, Sam Williams Construction Co 122294, Ellis Tacke Construction Co 124873, with a final city council approval pending. The eight room, 11140 square foot facility includes a tee room two offices a large kitchen an adult room two art rooms and a sculpture room. Architecture draws on Spanish hip architecture.
Police investigate an attempted rape in a Scottsdale apartment after a 1:30 a.m. struggle. A 27-year-old man, about five six, 130 to 150 pounds, allegedly pried a window screen to enter the room but was beaten by two women and escaped through the window. In a separate report, two women’s suits valued at 250 dollars each were stolen from a car in Fashion Square between 6 and 9:30 p.m. the prior night after a vent window was pried open.
Scottsdale administrators said they would discuss matters with any teacher group but could not negotiate with a sole bargaining agent. They cited legal advice that recognizing a single agent could imply a formal agreement, while noting past discussions with the Scottsdale Federation of Teachers, the Scottsdale Education Association, and a district council.
Paradise Valley School District votes to seek a 423000 bond to convert to a middle school system. First 352000 package funds Greenway Elementary library and Desert Cove additions, with a second 71 000 plan for Greenway expansion and Desert Cove PE facilities. Conversion to a two grade middle school cycle begins next September with Greenway as intermediate. A separate agenda item approves remodeling work at Campo Bello and Greenway classrooms with floor grinding by Burton Construction.
