Mansfield says votes exist to impeach Nixon in House
Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield said he has been told the votes are there to impeach President Nixon in the House, but he doubts a two thirds Senate majority to convict exists. He expects a prompt Senate trial if the House impeaches, and says the Senate will act independently. He declined to name House members who informed him and disagreed with Senator Byrd on Nixon’s impeachment strategy.
