Scottsdale Planning Commission recommended new service station criteria drawing protests from over 20 oil company representatives and station operators. They argued 500 foot station separations 25 foot driveways from intersections 30000 square foot minimum lots and design bans create monopoly risk and hurt profits and livelihoods.
Rain halted a Chicago Cubs exhibition with the San Francisco Giants at Scottsdale Stadium. The first measurable rain this month, .02 inches by 11 a.m., delayed play as a strong cold front moved into Arizona from the Northwest. Clouds and showers were expected to continue through today with clearing tonight and cooler temperatures tomorrow.
About 115 teachers at Scottsdale high schools voted to authorize a strike if needed. The result came at a 6 am meeting of the Scottsdale Federation of Teachers at Knights of Columbus Hall. The union seeks a $900 salary raise and bargaining rights, with district schools to stay open during any strike.
AFTRA began a walkout against NBC CBS ABC CBC and Mutual over salary and overtime terms. Of note are prominent anchors Cronkite Huntley Brinkley Jennings and Today hosts Downs and Baird protesting in the rain outside NBC. Union seeks 300 weekly base plus 50 cut of commercial fees. networks offer 300 plus 25 with 25 over three years.
Dan Bartos of 8350 E Bonnie Rose seeks return of 100 from City of Scottsdale and city court. City Attorney Dick Filler says objections will be filed to Bartos judgment and order in Division 14 of Maricopa County Superior Court. He notes half the fine was given to the city and 50 remains as bond money after Bartos appealed, with further action dependent on Superior Court exoneration.
Police investigated three downtown Scottsdale burglaries including a break-in at Western Savings at 35 S Old Scottsdale Road. Entry came via roof holes in two cases while a rear door was pried at the savings office. Sprouse Beltz department store reported popcorn pocket knives and a small cash loss. The Coach House Tavern at 145 W Indian School was entered through the roof.
