Supreme Court overturns flag on seat conviction

The Supreme Court, in a 5 4 decision, voided a Massachusetts man Valarie Goguen conviction for wearing a U S flag on his pants seat, ruling the state flag mistreatment law was too vague and broad to sustain. Justice Powell said the law failed to draw clear lines between criminal and noncriminal treatment. Justice White noted free speech concerns while Rehnquist warned about emotional flag significance.
