Landmark Arizona Falls hydro plant torn down after decades
Salt River Project removed the 56 year old Arizona Falls hydro electrical plant near 56th Street last month after 18 years idle. Opened May 24, 1913 the 1000 kilowatt facility fed irrigation pumps and ground water control through the Cross Cut and South Consolidated Canals until 1950. The plant’s equipment was sold and the site later used as a storage shed as water tables no longer required pumping.
