North Carolina State, 29 1, will face Marquette, 26 4, in Greensboro after the Wolfpack beat UCLA in double overtime. Marquette reached the final by edging Michigan 72 70 while UCLA fell to Kansas in the other semifinal.
UCLA coach John Wooden says he cannot compel his star players to perform in tonight's NCAA third place game against Kansas. He notes senior Kareem Walton and others may skip to avoid a farce, while praising Walton as a good person who sometimes acts against his beliefs. Kansas coach Ted Owens laments losses to UCLA's best.
Johnny Miller, 26, from San Francisco, wins the Heritage Classic by three strokes over Gibby Gilbert at Harbour Town. He finishes 67 67 72 70 276, earning $40,000 for the day and a season total of $149,105. Witnesses saw a nude male and a couple streak on the course as Miller celebrated. Gilbert takes $22,800, Dick Crawford 70 for third, and Tom Kite fourth after a 69 final round.
Reds notes highlight Gary Nolan easing back from injury with live throwing to Reds coach Larry Shepard and catcher Johnny Bench. Nolan pitched no official innings but impressed scouts as he returns to form, lifting Reds enthusiasm ahead of a doubleheader split against Mets and Cardinals.

Keith Erickson poured in a career high 40 points as the Phoenix Suns defeated the Golden State Warriors 134-121 at Phoenix Coliseum. The Suns pulled away after a tight first half, with Russell scoring 46 for the Warriors and Dick Van Arsdale adding 22 for Phoenix.
Purdue defeats Utah 87-81 at Madison Square Garden to claim the National Invitation Tournament title. Utah star Mike Sojourner, though named MVP over Purdue’s team, finished with 94 points and 72 rebounds across four games. Sojourner hints at a pro career, while Purdue coach Fred Schaus notes the earlier loss to Utah helped prepare for the final.
Boston Bruins rout Montreal Canadiens 6-3 to seal their third NHL Eastern Division title in four years at Boston Garden. Montreal led early on Yvon Cournoyer and Henri Richard goals before Boston answered with four in the second period led by Dave Forbes, Carol Vadnais, Andre Savard, and Greg Sheppard. Rod Gilbert hit 300 career goals for the New York Rangers in a 5-3 win over Buffalo, with a 17,500 Garden crowd applauding. Flyers beat Blues 4-1 as Rick MacLeish, Andre DuPont, Orest Kindrachuk, and Bill Clement scored. Polin added a first-period backhander for St Louis.
