Senator William Proxmire of Wisconsin cast the lone no vote as Casey received Senate approval to head the Securities and Exchange Commission. The nomination advances despite opposition, marking a key nomination for regulation of markets and corporate accountability.
A New York lawyer involved in Casey's nomination sparked renewed hearings as eight U.S. senators joined a 25 minute floor debate. The discussion touched on delays and questions about “a wheeler dealer” conduct during the nomination process and fresh hearings earlier in the month.
Scottsdale City Court gave two men maximum sentences. Terry Lee Vandermate, 22, of 2422 E Danbury, received six months for indecent exposure after witnesses at 10825 N 85th Pl reported seeing him. James D Seaton, 1217 N Patricia Phoenix, was sentenced to six months for indecent exposure after initial concealed weapon and vagrancy charges near Coronado High School.
A fire at 10:05 am Wednesday damaged a residence on Pierce Street. Firemen said faulty Christmas lights in a box short circuited an electrical plug, causing a blaze that damaged a car valued at 7500 and injured items at the Henry Hanson residence placed at 100 dollars.

Roger S Smith 6 died Tuesday in Phoenix Nursing and Con valescent Center Scottsdale. He was a retired livestock buyer for Holly Sugar Co. Survived by wife Josephine a son Peyton of Dalhart Texas and three grandchildren. Services held at Messinger Mortuary. Contributions suggested to family.
President Nixon sent a 7300 word message to Congress proposing to abolish seven of the twelve federal departments and create four new super departments. Interior Agriculture Commerce Transportation HUD and HEW would be replaced by Human Resources Community Development Economic Affairs and Natural Resources. State Defense Justice and Treasury remain unchanged. The plan aims to focus government on results and public service rather than red tape.
