A 20 year old Scottsdale woman Patricia Thomas and her passenger David Antone 16 were injured when her northbound truck on Scottsdale Rd went fishtailing at high speed and rolled over twice near McDowell Rd. The driver faced reckless driving charges.
Haifa, Israel. Abba Houshy, 70, longtime Labor Party leader and Haifa mayor, died after a heart attack last week hospitalization at Rothschild Hospital. Hospital spokesmen said his condition worsened Sunday night following the attack.
At the annual meeting Continental National Bank reveals plans to construct a regional home office at the northwest corner of 68th Street and Camelback Road in Scottsdale, pending rezoning from residential to service residential or commercial use. The bank, headquartered at 4000 N Central Ave in Phoenix, expects construction in the second half of the year. Directors elected include Gil Dye Jr, Cynn Hester, Roy Kite Jr, John Murphy, T C Basham, Harry Nace Jr, A B Robbs Jr, J Davis Wynne. Basham re-elected president and new directors Paul Howell and Harry Hartley join. Robbs remains chairman.
Thunderstorms with high winds rain and hail battered the Southeast causing power outages accidents and property damage. Tornadoes uprooted trees and forced rescues across East Texas western Louisiana while one injury occurred in Hamshire Tex. Three drownings occurred on Lake Travis and a private plane crash near Chattanooga left four occupants unharmed. Arkansas police cited weather for four highway fatalities.
A court hearing on an injunction requested by Eller Sign Co. to stop a city order moving three billboards from McDowell Rd is delayed by calendar conflicts. A second hearing concerns Scottsdale and others challenging the McDowell Mountain Irrigation District by McCulloch Properties, with a state bill potentially superseding the action.
Police Chief Walter Nemetz underwent gall bladder surgery today at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital. It was his first hospital stay, with surgeon Dr. Boyd Metcalf performing the operation. Nemetz was born at home and previously had tonsil removal in a doctor’s office.
UPI reports a third allied counteroffensive named Maine Craig targeting a major supply route from Laos. Earlier operations Atlas Wedge and Massachusetts Striker already struck Laotian corridors and rubber plantations near Saigon with heavy casualties and widespread mortar and rocket fire against 35 U.S. bases and towns.
British government defends Anthony Lee as the right choice after his imposition on Anguilla amid anger from 800 residents who staged mock funerals for Lee and St Kitts Premier Bradshaw. In London the Commons debates the handling of the Anguilla affair as Stewart defends the move. An American resident warns Anguilla risk to stability as unrest simmers.
Israeli and Egyptian forces fight along a 72 mile stretch of the Suez Canal while oil refineries burn on the canal's Suez end. Near the Sea of Galilee a 70 minute machinegun clash occurs with no Jordanian casualties. Amid sandstorms UN arranged a cease fire as Jordan and Syria undergo cabinet reshuffles and floods drive refugees to shelters.
A wallet containing more than 1200 dollars was recovered by police after four boys aged about 10 to 13 brought a mini bike to Don's Sport Shop on McDowell Road for repair. The wallet belonged to the owner’s wife and was later returned. One youth was placed in parental custody pending further investigation. Additional burglaries reported include two cameras and wine from Lucian Ortolani’s home, shelves from an Allied Construction model home, items from Tom Jackson and Associates Realty, and valuables from Al Easterday’s home.
Ex-president Joseph Kasavubu, Congo Republic leader, died at Boma on the Atlantic coast. He was 56 and had been ill for some time. Kasavubu retired in 1965 after Mobutu seized power and later withdrew from public life. He was born in 1913 at Tshela in Central Congo province.
Firemen report a 200 dollar car fire at 8056 East Virginia at 8 26 am blamed on a carburetor backfire. They also fought a small 20 dollar electrical fan fire at 6125 East Osborn Road at 1 08 pm Saturday and a trash bin fire behind Cocopah School at 6600 East Cholla at 8 46 pm Sunday.
A topping out ceremony marks the pouring of the final concrete for the 10.5 million seven story Maricopa County General Hospital at Roosevelt and 24th Streets in Phoenix. County Supervisors Burns Haws and Stark will assist as concrete is transferred to the crane and lifted to the topmost section above the front entrance. The hospital, now about two thirds complete on a 54 acre site, will replace the older 3435 West Durango facility and consist of 495 beds across several one story buildings dating to the early 1940s.
