Six sites named for world’s 375 million atom smasher

National Academy of Sciences recommends six candidate sites for the AEC backed 375 million proton accelerator project. The list includes Ann Arbor Michigan Brookhaven Upton New York Denver Madison Wisconsin Sierra Foothills near Sacramento California and South Barrington near Chicago. Construction would require 6 to 8 years and about 2000 jobs with a 60 million annual budget.

U2 crashes near Sahuari ta Arizona during routine training

A Chinese Air Force U2 high reconnaissance plane crashed eight miles east of Sahuari ta after the pilot parachuted to safety. Capt Hung Ti Fan was hospitalized in good condition at Davis-Monthan AFB. The $4 million aircraft burned on impact and officials investigate the cause.

Atomic Energy Commission considers 85 sites in Arizona

The commission evaluated 85 potential locations for a particle accelerator in Arizona. Proposals included two near Windrest, near Scottsdale, plus sites near Pinnacle Peak, Cave Creek, Sun City, Apache Junction, and on the Gila River Indian Reservation.
