Supreme Court Refuses To Arbitrate Hopi Navajo Land Dispute
The Supreme Court declined to arbitrate a seven year conflict over joint reservation land in northern Arizona. The 9th Circuit upheld orders limiting Navajo housing on the two million acre area and reducing Navajo sheep herds from about 120000 to 8139. The Hopi seek half the land, arguing loss of joint-use rights after Navajo population gains.

Arizona law bills face votes in state Senate and committee
Open hearings bill to require open sessions of the State Tax Appeals Board failed 15 to 11 in the Senate with several absences. A citizens panel urged higher license fees for the Game and Fish Commission. A repeal of auto emissions inspections stalled in the House Health Committee on a split vote. A rape evidence bill failed 44 in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Another measure would create an all Indian county along the reservation boundary, a plan critics call wasteful.
