Sierra Club warns silt would ruin Grand Canyon dams
Sierra Club spokesman David Brower told the House reclamation subcommittee that the proposed Hualapai and Marble Canyon dams would destroy both dam sites and the canyon’s beauty due to sediment buildup. Governors Hathaway of Wyoming and Rampton of Utah urged study or authorization of water imports, while Rep. Udall defended the project’s financial feasibility. Brower noted a large member increase and questioned Interior officials on the 13 to 30 mile backwater claim, stating he would oppose the dams even for funding the Central Arizona Project.

Arizona water experts challenge crisis and CAP feasibility
University of Arizona researchers Robert A. Young and William E. Martin argue no real water crisis exists in Arizona and the Central Arizona Project may not be economically feasible. They claim groundwater could meet needs for 170 more years, with 170 million recoverable acre feet initially and only about 70 million withdrawn.

Johnson scraps merger of Labor and Commerce Departments
President Johnson, facing labor opposition, rejected merging Labor and Commerce into one agency. He sent a special message to Congress to study the idea by a presidential committee on labor management policy, noting the concern about losing a separate voice for labor. He still believes a new department could aid future prosperity but will await committee advice before acting.
