Hospital plea postponed by planning unit

The Maricopa County health planning unit delayed a decision on a proposal for separate surgical facilities at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital. Officials said the plan would lease and remodel 3,600 square feet across from the hospital to house outpatient surgery, reducing the main operating rooms load by about 1,800 minor surgeries annually.

Board defers nurse and staff agreements over budget review

The School Board, led by members Bob Uldane and Jim Wellington, postponed approval of negotiated agreements with school nurses and certified personnel until the third budget projection is reviewed. Superintendent Burnkrant argued approval was needed to compile the projection. A compromise allows using tentative cost figures for the budget but final approval awaits board review. decision tentatively set for March 16.

Dixon Electronics Fire Causes Five Thousand Dollar Loss

A fire at Dixon Electronics on 87th Street and Thomas early today caused an estimated 5 000 dollars in damage to 10 test boards, a test stand, and wiring. Firemen used carbon dioxide and dry chemical powders to extinguish the blaze. A separate vehicle fire at 7126 E Thomas damaged a car owned by Carol Willoughby with 200 dollars in damage. cause unknown.

switchblade found with Cocopah School student

Police took a switchblade from a 12 year old girl at Cocopah School after two teachers observed her carrying the knife at 3:40 p m. The girl told officers the knife belonged to a friend and was entrusted to her. She was released to her mother.

ASU enrolls over 30,000 students for first time

Arizona State University reports total enrollment topping 30,000 for the first time with 30,222 in the second semester. Of these, 24,935 are on campus, 4,560 are extension-class students, and 717 are correspondence students. On campus numbers grew from 1,490 in the first semester as extension students rose by 1,958.

Tempe teen placed on three years probation for LSD sale

UPI reports Tempe 19 year old Sid Emery was placed on three years probation by Superior Court Judge Paul LaPrade after a October 1969 LSD sale arrest. A second charge was dropped. Emery's father Raymond had been cleared of conspiracy to steal tablets used as evidence.

Eight Huey helicopters shot down in Laos incursion

UPI reports eight American UH1 Huey troop helicopters were shot down during the South Vietnamese drive into Laos along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Losses raise American aircraft totals to 45 with 41 dead 42 wounded and 26 missing. shooters include surface to air missiles and conventional anti aircraft fire near the DMZ.

Council approves bond sale for city projects

City Council authorized sale of 1,485,000 in municipal improvement bonds at 5.2914 percent with John Nuveen and Company of Chicago and Reisner Ely Beck as brokers. Proceeds fund a public services building at Second Street and Civic Center Plaza, police training facility at Desert Park, street maintenance building on McKellips Road, two fire stations at Scottsdale Airport and McDonald Drive, and airport improvements. Arnold Construction bid 699,000 for the public services building. other low bids ranged from 44,000 to 159,000 for various facilities.

State Agency Rejects Transfer of Telephone Exchange

In Phoenix area a move to shift the telephone exchange from Scottsdale to North Phoenix was denied by the State Corporation Commission. Residents of Northeast Phoenix would have benefited from toll free calls to Glendale, but petitions to transfer the exchange were rejected on Tuesday.

Youth held after threats near Lake Air Force Base

Randy Alan Baggett 17 was taken into custody at Lake Air Force Base stockade after threatening police with a shotgun and rifle Tuesday. His mother alerted authorities saying he was absent without leave from the Army and a caller on the phone warned he would kill the first officer through the door. Police persuaded him to place the guns outside.

City Attorney Filer moves to dismiss zoning suit

City Attorney Dick Filler filed a motion to dismiss a suit by Environmental Developers of Denver and Ee C Kranzler Jr claiming the city blocked a 960 unit high rise condo plan on a 0.40 acre parcel at Garner north west Hayden and Camelback. The plaintiffs seek action and damages while Filler argues lack of court power to force zoning change and that a building permit cannot issue until a zoning resolution is passed. The case is set for March 12 before Judge Fred Hyder in Maricopa County Superior Court.

Police Still Seek Owner of Pickup in Canal Incident

Police seek owner of a 1970 model pickup found in the Arizona Canal near Chaparral Road on Tuesday morning. The vehicle registered to Ty F. R. Boyd of Kingman, who reportedly stayed at the Rodeway Inn and checked out at 6:30 a.m. There was no sign of foul play. ignition was on and gear shift in park when recovered. Police are tracking the camper unit and note a 270 caliber rifle left in the motel room and several spent shells found in the truck.
