Tests Using Sunshine Machine Aid Space Solar Cells
Boeing engineers test wafer thin silicon solar cells with a portable Sunshine machine in a vacuum chamber exposing them to a xenon lamp to simulate six times Earth's sunlight. Tests vary cell temperatures from 40 below to 320 F, aiming to prevent sunburn in future interplanetary ships and ensure cells survive near Mercury.
