States show budget deficit for current fiscal year

The 50 states ran a combined budget deficit of 4.2 billion dollars this year. The shortfall came from projected spending of 102.1 billion against 95.9 billion in general revenue, per the Census Bureau.

Gamma radiation spurs new business frontier in sterilization

UPI reports gamma irradiation drives a growing industry to sterilize foods cosmetics medical disposables and more using Cobalt 60 and other isotopes. Companies like Radiation Technology Inc Iradco and American Nuclear Co expand production with plans to preserve strawberries fish poultry and create irradiated flooring and thermoplastic rivets. By 1975 annual sterilized medical disposables may reach 100 million dollars and food radiation could reach 500 million. Early limits included equipment capacity and lengthy FDA standard decisions.
