Bernier Elected State Master Councilor Of DeMolay

Robert Bernier of Seattedale Heights wins the 33rd annual DeMolay conclave in Phoenix to lead 1,300 members across 27 Arizona chapters. He is active as NHS president, Key Club vice president, DeMolay master councilor, and Boys State delegate, recently earning the Order of Chevalier. The Scottsdale DeMolay earned multiple honors, including a state second in basketball and a plaque for membership growth.

Scottsdale Civitan leader named governor-elect for Great Southwest District

Robert W. Ronald of 78336 Hubbell has been named governor-elect of the Great Southwest District, serving in 1964 65. The district covers Arizona New Mexico and West Texas with Carl W. Dotinson Jr as lieutenant governor Area 1. Both men assume office June 1 1964.

City seeks transfer of 1892 acres for desert park

City Manager Richard Malcolm asked the council to file an application to transfer 1892 acres of state lands north of Shea Boulevard to the city for recreational use. The land could be bought for 82.5 per acre or leased pending Bureau of Land Management approval. The plan envisions a natural desert park along power lines between Thunderbird Road and Shea and near Paradise Valley. The council also enacted a property tax limit of 1.07 per 100 and set a planning hearing for a new sign ordinance Monday at 8 p.m.

Margaret 3 Stines Rites Scheduled

Funeral services are set in Hardin Montana for Mrs. Margaret M. Stines 48 who died yesterday at her home on East Mitchell Drive. She moved to Scottsdale nine years ago from Billings Montana and was born in Sheridan Wyoming. She belonged to the Order of Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile in Montana. Survivors include her husband Charles G two sons Jack G of Luke Air Force Base Terry J and Jerry R both of Sentisdale and a sister Mrs J Leonard Graham of Dayton Wyoming.

Goldwater Faces GOP Fire Over Civil Rights Vote

Senator Barry Goldwater drew sharp Republican criticism for opposing the civil rights bill while winning delegates for the July convention. Governor Scranton urged Goldwater to change his position, while governors Romney and Rockefeller faulted him for courting the South. The UPI tally showed Goldwater with a 16 vote cushion toward nomination. President Johnson urged all Americans to embrace the new civil rights bill as a landmark step for equal opportunity.

President envisions urban extension service from universities

President Johnson in Irvine foresees a nationwide urban extension service modeled after agricultural outreach. He would have the education commissioner meet leaders like Clark Kerr to implement university driven city improvement, stressing the frontier of urban life and democracy over communism.

Scottsdale Youths Attend CAP Training

A group of 27 Scottsdale cadets completed a Civil Air Patrol encampment at Walker Air Force Base Roswell NM. They stayed in Air Force barracks took classes from aircraft maintenance to judo and earned Certificates of Completion with ribbons. Squadron 311 meets at Scottsdale Stadium Saturdays 9 am to 12 pm under Commander Ron Hanson.

Rights Plank Sought by GOP Platform Chief

Rep. Melvin R. Laird urged the Republican Platform Committee to endorse the civil rights law and for the convention to reject any candidate who opposes it. He said Goldwater could back a plank supporting the law without harming his candidacy and that a president must enforce all federal laws.
