Goldberg Seeks To Avert Strike By Flight Engineers
Labor Secretary Arthur J. Goldberg convened a last-ditch meeting with officials from Trans World Airlines the Flight Engineers Union and the Air Line Pilots Union to prevent a planned 9 p.m. EDT Tuesday strike by TWA flight engineers. The walkout would halt operations at the fourth largest U.S. carrier, affecting about 20 000 employees. The dispute centers on cockpit crew numbers and qualifications with arbitration and economic issues at stake and a presidential commission recommendation to trim cockpit crews from four to three and merge flight engineers with the pilots.
