City Manager Bets Bourbon For A Quit Challenge

John Chase a 47 year old city mechanic agreed to quit smoking for a month in a bet with City Manager Bill Donaldson. Donaldson paid $8.16 today as part payment of a quart of expensive bourbon collected after Chase claimed he could stop smoking. The bet arose during a trip from India California while returning a city fire truck.

House panel blocks tougher gun controls by tie vote

Grass Fires Burn Near Scottsdale Under Multiple Alarms

Firefighters responded to three grass or brush fires in Scottsdale on Monday with no buildings damaged. One fire along a canal near 6335 E Rose Circle burned about 100 feet before being controlled. Two other fires at 68th St and Thomas Rd and at 68th St and Oak were extinguished after limited damage. A separate fence fire at 8206 E Palm Lane caused about 50 dollars in damage.

Obscene film charge filed against Scottsdale man

Lawrence Orr, 33, of 7814 East Beatrice, was arrested by Scottsdale vice squad detectives on Monday for renting obscene films. Det. Jack Kelly charged Orr around noon at Smitty's Lounge on North Scottsdale Road after Orr allegedly returned films to a lender and was booked into city jail.

College taxes rise in tentative Maricopa budget

The Maricopa County Junior College Board approved a tentative 1967 68 budget raising the tax rate from 37 to 45 cents per $100. The $11,929,378 plan allocates nearly 80 percent to salaries and marks a 27 percent spending increase.
