Cosmodom first step marks space city vision in Soviet art

Moscow reports Salyut, the orbital laboratory, has moved to a higher orbit and may serve as the hub of a future space colony. Tass cites plans for a space train of Soyuz ships docking with Salyut as cosmonauts conduct medical and biological research aboard the 25 ton station.

Bomb scare aboard American Airlines flight from Phoenix

An American Airlines Flight 134 from Phoenix to Cleveland was searched at Lambert Field after the FBI in Phoenix received a call demanding 50 000 dollars for information on deactivating an explosive device. No bomb was found and the plane resumed its flight after landing. The caller claimed a device would detonate at 10 000 feet and asked for the ransom to be left in the desert.

Storms bring scattered showers and twisters across the nation

United Press International reports scattered showers and thunderstorms across most states on Monday. Tornado sightings occurred in Kansas Indiana Michigan Oklahoma Minnesota and Wisconsin but injuries were not reported. Hail the size of golf balls fell west of Buffalo New York and marble sized hail accompanied winds up to 60 mph at Chanute Kansas.

FBI taps 47 telephones and six microphones Hoover says

Director J Edgar Hoover told a closed door House subcommittee the FBI is tapping 47 phones and has planted at least six microphones for security or crime investigation. He denied taps on congressmen and rejected reports of CIA phone surveillance.

Phoenix girl falls to death atop Papago Park butte

In Phoenix a 17 year old girl, Lisa Kay Coggins, fell 175 feet from a ledge on a Papago Park butte while with four friends. Police reported beams of light from cars nearby before the incident around 12:30 am. A motorist had reported a gunshot near 50th Street and McDowell, with a man carrying a rifle seen fleeing toward the park.

Senate foes cite study on Lockheed bankruptcy impact

Opponents in the Senate claim a McDonnell Douglas study shows Lockheed bankruptcy would create more American jobs than a rescue. They argue the analysis, from a rival, is valid and hinges on market shifts away from the L 1011 Tristar to the DC 10, with GE engines vs Rolls Royce.

Golf courses in Maricopa County see new valuations

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved substantial revaluations for 16 semi private golf courses raising total value from 4.9 million to 9.2 million. Assessor Kenneth Kunes said the changes aim for equalized assessments though some courses were dropped in value. Some courses also saw the assessment rate rise from 18 to 25 percent reflecting profitability.

Fire destroys Kaibab School shed and contents

Fire crews responded to a blaze at Kaibab School on Monday noon. The shed and contents including gym mats valued at 250 dollars were consumed as flames spread quickly. No arrests have been made while officials and police questioned several children.
