Many districts skip kindergarten aid despite state plan
More than a quarter of Arizona elementary districts will lack kindergartens next fall despite a state aid law. The Department of Education reports 64 of 216 districts have asked for exemptions, with only 70 districts offering programs in 1969-70 and about 150 expected this fall. Scottsdale benefits from its own system, while exemptions cite space or no kindergarten-age pupils and some districts transport students to neighbors.

Arizona unemployment holds at 46 percent in June
Arizona's unemployment rate remained at 46 percent in June per the Employment Security Commission. The U S rate was 5.6 percent while the state rate stood at 4.5 percent the prior month and 4.6 percent in June 1970. About 37,200 Arizonans were unemployed at mid June including around 20,000 school youths unable to find work.

Saguaro High School pom pon girls won the championship trophy for outstanding pom line. Coronado captain Gail Evans earned four first place and three second place awards. Saguaro varsity earned two superior ribbons, one excellent rating, and an outstanding spirit award. Coronado earned Spirit Stick for enthusiasm and Devine Herman named Miss Congeniality and nominated for Miss Cheerleader 1971. Saguaro JV also claimed best to line championship trophy.

Thieves Take Two Saddles From Local Residence
Two saddles valued at 200 dollars were reported stolen from the tack room at Elliot Klearman residence 11411 North 68th Street on Tuesday night about 10 20. A third saddle was recovered in the middle of a nearby street, police said.

Tornado Activity and Severe Storms Across Plains
Severe thunderstorms swept the Great Plains with tornadoes sighted in Ulm Minnesota and near Santanta Kansas. A tornado downed trees and damaged a building in Ulm with no injuries reported. Wichita Kansas endured a strong thunderstorm with 54 mph winds and about an inch of rain in an hour. Garden City Kansas received over two inches of rain while Topeka Kansas had a brief five minute downpour.

Swim pool seminar set for pool owners and operators
A two hour illustrated seminar by the Maricopa County Health Department will be held at the Safari Hotel Convention Center at 7 30 p.m. on August 4. Public health staff will cover pool testing water chemistry maintenance and troubleshooting.
