Conspiracy charged Viet vets indicted on federal charges
A federal grand jury indicted six members of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War for conspiring to disrupt the Republican National Convention with firebombs and weapons. Florida chairman Scott Camil faced separate counts for manufacturing firebombs and teaching others to use them, risking up to 15 years in prison and $20,000 in fines. The panel also charged four co-defendants already jailed after a closed grand jury proceeding. The indictment alleges plans for “fire teams” to attack police stations and stores in Miami Beach between August 21 and 24, 1972, using wrist rockets and incendiaries.

Naval shelling splits Redline near Quang Tri City
South Vietnamese Marines backed by naval gunfire and heavy US bombing smashed through North Vietnamese troops on the northern rim of Quang Tri City and pushed deeper into the provincial capital. About 800 marines fought with intense air and naval support as US Army helicopters landed supplies and reinforcements. One American was killed and roughly 40 soldiers wounded. Col. Nguyen Trong Bao, chief of the paratroop division, was shot down with his helicopter while surveying the action. A downed crew and a second helicopter crewman were killed in the ensuing incident. The breakthrough allows marines to set up a blocking force near the Quang Tri Citadel, an area believed to be heavily fortified with Communist forces.
