Mediator role out in Arizona grape dispute

The Arizona Industrial Commission says it lacks jurisdiction to mediate between the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee AFL-CIO and grape growers. Chairman Bruce Thoeny says the legislature did not empower the commission to act as a conciliator or to certify strikes. Gustavo Gutierrez, Arizona UFW representative, had urged mediation and observer deployment. no violations were found after a prior meeting on alleged breaches. The UFW began picketing vineyards last month to organize workers.

Burglary Reports Split Items Stolen In Scottsdale

Police report multiple burglaries in Scottsdale. Items taken include firearms from Edward Arnold home on 74th Street, a tire theft at American Oil Co. station on West Indian School Road, a purse from Mary Hopkins home on Plaza, tools from Donald Follis storeroom, and a motorcycle owned by Michael Lawler on Avalon Street. Values range from about 106 to 660 dollars.

Fire at Big Surf Pond blazes from misapplied foam mix

Rural and Tempe Fire Departments battled a blaze at the Big Surf surfing pond under construction on Hayden Road. Officials said a styrofoam spray mixture on the concrete wall ignited due to incorrect mixing. A firefighter in a raft fought the flames from the water side. Damage amount undisclosed.

Pritzlaff resigns House seat after Malta ambassadorship

Arizona State Rep. John C. Pritzlaff Jr. resigns from the legislature after being confirmed by the U.S. Senate as ambassador to Malta. He submitted the resignation to Gov. Williams and House Speaker Haugh, with the governor saying no special election will be called and the Maricopa Supervisors will choose his successor from District 8-C.

Return of Winnie Ruth Judd Sought in Arizona Extradition

California authorities were asked to return Winnie Ruth Judd, known as the Trunk Murderess, to Arizona. Gov. Williams formally requested extradition from Gov. Reagan, with Sheriff Mummert to be notified. A hearing is set in Mt. Diablo, California, on the fugitive charge. Judd, 65, was taken into custody June 27 outside Oakland.

Phoenix Planning Commission grants continuances on two area developments

The commission continued the planned area development request for 47 acres at the northwest corner of Camelback Road and 64th Street to July 30 after granting a continuance from developer and property owner. Transamerica Title Insurance Co. presented a 46-lot plan adjacent to Valley Country Club. A six month extension for George Wittman to start construction on a previously approved NA northwest corner Lincoln Drive and 36th Street development was also approved.
