U S Marines behind tanks launched a large drive toward the DMZ with heavy artillery and B52 bombardments. Reports from Khe Sanh said Marines repelled a Communist attack on Hill 689 and casualty figures listed 10 dead 81 wounded while North Vietnamese claims varied about Hill 689.
Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey and Senator Eugene McCarthy clash on whether the war in Vietnam or domestic order is the top issue. Humphrey emphasizes crime and urban programs while McCarthy calls Vietnam the more decisive issue and rejects a clear campaign stance.
Firefighters responded to an 18 foot trailer owned by Earl C. Johnson catching fire due to heat build up in an under inflated unit while it was being towed on Scottsdale Road at Thunderbird Road. Damage estimated at $2 060 to the trailer and nearby property.

Eleven people died on state highways during the Fourth of July period. The last victim, Richard D. Avelar, 23, of Flagstaff, was killed in a one car crash on Route 89A near Sedona. Edith Lois Keaney, 69, Prescott, died in a one car rollover on Route 69 south of Cordes Junction. Antonio Davila, 18, Bowie, drowned when the car left a Safford road and trapped him in three feet of water. Francisco Nunez, 17, Bowie, and two other passengers attempted to help.
UPI reports over ten years Arizona employment rose 60 percent to about 550000 nonagricultural jobs. The Arizona State Employment Service notes trades added 35200 jobs and services added 33800, a 92 percent rise. In Maricopa County last year averaged 316500 jobs, a one third gain since 1960.
Rep Emanuel Celler urged the House Rules Committee to clear for a vote this week a bill banning interstate sales of all firearms. He argued easy access poses a critical threat to life and property and said the measure would make gun purchases harder for criminals. The Senate prepared to resume hearings on gun legislation as Congress nears August adjournment.
Two New Mexico businessmen, Paul K. Beck and Jim Stephens of Roswell, were killed when their Beechcraft Bonanza struck a railroad boxcar near Sky Harbor Airport. The plane, en route for a business appointment, shed a wing and burned after hitting the boxcar full of row boats. Fire crews contained the blaze as witnesses noted turbulence from a Boeing 707 may have affected control.
Reports say a 100 kiloton atomic blast occurred 800 miles southeast of Tahiti over Mururoa lagoon as France conducts a series of tests expected to end this summer. Protests rise in Tahiti with locals signaling No to the Bomb while de Gaulle's government pushes ahead.

Services set for Wednesday at 10 30 a m Our Lady of Perpetual Help with Mesa Cemetery interment. Messinger Mortuary calls after 7 30 p m Tuesday.
A 4.5 magnitude earthquake shook Southern California from the Santa Barbara Channel at 7:33 a.m. PDT. Dr. Charles Richter of Caltech said it was fairly strong with no serious damage reported. The event is the eighth in a series begun last June 26, following the July 4 peak of 5.0 and about $10,000 in window and glass damage in the Goleta Valley west of Santa Barbara.
In Phoenix a new denture powder named Super-Dent claims to form a moisture activated adhesive. It remains strong with saliva, resisting dislodgement during meals, and is described as safe and gentle to dentures and gums. The product is said to be available at drug counters.
