Nixon names new Vietnam negotiator Bruce to take post
President Nixon announced David K. E. Bruce, a veteran diplomat, as the new chief negotiator for Vietnam talks. He pledged to withdraw almost all American ground troops within a year if Hanoi agrees, while warning of prolonged bloodshed and possible air strikes if negotiations fail. Bruce will meet the President on July 4 and start in Paris by August 1, as Nixon argues a broad policy aims to exit virtually all U.S. combat forces by next spring.
