Disengagement Near as Israel’s Meir Seeks Step Toward Peace
In Jerusalem a stormy session ended 76 to 35 as Golda Meir urged the troop withdrawal move as a potential peace step. Israel will pull back from positions south of the Cairo Suez highway and open the route to civilian traffic, with UNEF to guard evacuated zones for six hours before handing over to Egypt. The move includes reconditioning about 750,000 mines for future defense and transferring 300 wounded Egyptian soldiers from Suez to Cairo hospitals. Sadat pressed for Palestinian participation in Geneva talks and linked canal reopening to broader aims. The full peace conference had adjourned last year while Egypt and Israel finalized the withdrawal pact signed last Friday.
