Atlanta reports the first nationwide flu outbreak of the winter from the Center for Disease Control. Influenza B linked to the Hong Kong strain was found among Vanderbilt University students in Nashville Tennessee.
In Barcelona harbor the U S Navy halted its search for all 49 sailors and Marines killed when a Navy landing craft collided with a Spanish freighter during a goodwill visit. A 30 minute tribute was held aboard the Guam to honor the dead from the Guam and the Trenton.
The Agriculture Department reports in its Food Marketing Alert that beef poultry pork and milk will be plentiful on shelves next month. The forecast reflects farmers stepping up production of basic food commodities over the past year for buyers like schools hospitals and institutions.
John William Lamb, 41, is jailed in Tulsa on a federal charge for the January 7 robbery of an Albuquerque Savings and Loan. He faces a removal hearing January 27 to return to Albuquerque. Lamb was arrested by FBI agents and is one of four men linked to an Arizona State Prison escape on January 5.
President Carter issues an executive order granting full pardons for Vietnam era draft evaders who avoided violence. A 43 000 square foot North Scottsdale Center is planned at the northwest corner of Scottsdale Road and Gold Dust Avenue on 3.9 acres zoned highway commercial. It would include a supermarket Revco drug store Baskin eng ice cream parlor Pizza Inn Radio Shack and other stores with 203 parking spaces requested via variance. Development Review Board action pending.
Scottsdale boards appoints Richard W. Clark a 33 year old attorney to fill the Scottsdale School Board seat vacated by the resignation of Robert Usdane who now serves as a state senator. Clark was the fourth highest vote getter in November nine candidate election and had support from local groups including the PTA Community Parent Council Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce and Rep. James Skelly. Clark aims to improve district budget understanding and foster closer ties with Scottsdale city government while pursuing plans for a new middle school and remaining active with local organizations. He resides with his wife Joyce and two children at 8314 E Via de Encanto and will resign as attorney for Scottsdale Educational Enrichment Service.
The Scottsdale Daily Progress and Paradise Valley News Progress won seven ANA awards, including general excellence and multiple writing and typographical honors. The Progress achieved four awards and its fourth straight general excellence prize as the top daily under 30,000 circulation.
The Scottsdale School District boundary study panel voted to reject reassigning Kiva Hopi and Pueblo students among Kaibab Kachina Mohave. Chairman Dr Thomas Kennedy noted potential Kiva to Kachina Kaibab moves to offset a new middle school impact. The group set final discussion for next week and will report to Superintendent William Randall. The meeting occurs at the district education center at 3811 N 44th St.
House Republicans queried the expense of security arrangements for travel by Governor and Mrs Raul Castro amid ongoing scrutiny of state spending.
Exhibit plans for a park and wash inlet project face schedule changes. Corps says bids for the park are set for April and the inlet for July, with construction in 1978 previously moved from March and May due to engineering problems.
Rain is forecast for Saturday clouding the third of four Parada del Sol shoot-outs. The noon reenactment at Scottsdale Road and Main Street re-creates gunfights from the 1880s range wars, presented by the Scottsdale Jaycees. The event runs toward the final gunfight on January 29 with the Parada slated to begin February 3.
