Senate floor fight over rule change marks first sustained clash

In Phoenix the State Senate fought a rule change amid Democratic objections as Republicans passed a bill moving 152000 from the corporation commission to the state insurance department. Senator Harold Giss denounced the plan as subverting the committee system, but the measure cleared 18 to 12 with Campbell voting with Republicans.

Mildred R. Lantz a collector and authority on modern first editions died Sunday in Scottsdale Baptist Hospital She lived at 610 N Kachina La and had collected over 600 first editions A Northwestern University graduate she retired in 1950 after 30 years with the phone company in Illinois She was born in Valparaiso Indiana Survivors include sister Kathryn Schneider and brother-in-law Dr Philip Schneider Services were held this afternoon The family suggested contributions to the cardiac fund at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital Lubi Thomas Ratkovich 67 died Monday in Scottsdale Baptist Hospital A retired General Steel Casting employee he moved to Scottsdale in 1960 from Paris Illinois A native of Agoslavia he came to this country in 1923 He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church Survivors include wife Rose two daughters Mrs Robert Bruemmer of Scottsdale and Mrs Bernon Miller of Calabasas California and six grandchildren Rosary will be today at 830 pm in Messinger Mortuary Chapel Mass Wednesday morning at 9 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Entombment in Greenwood Cemetery.

UPI reports Chicago police faced delays and limited response to numerous distress calls. The downtown dispatch system reportedly routed several cries for help to distant cities including Louisville Philadelphia and others, leaving residents with little immediate aid.

Three injured in two car crashes on McDowell Road

A pair of two car crashes on E McDowell Rd within an hour left three people with injuries all treated and released. Grady Willhite 41 of 7917 BE Willetta Louise Christenson 53 of 7326 Bi Papago Dr complained of minor injuries in the first crash where Lake Joe Foster 19 of Mesa ran a red light and hit a southbound car driven by Christenson. Foster was cited for running a red light. In a second crash at 76th St and McDowell Philip Baird 36 of Phoenix was treated for minor injuries after his car was rear ended by Stephen Mihlfeld 16 of 8608 Holly. Mihlfeld cited for defective brakes and failure.

Stolen Color TV Sets Reported In Scottsdale Home

A color television valued at 570 dollars was taken from Madonna Strawbridge’s home at 7513 East Roosevelt after a sliding window was pried open. A bedroom was ransacked and $20 in change stolen. Police note several TVs have been stolen in recent months as burglars use sliding openings to load sets into a waiting car in the alley.

Fire fighter wins $100 check for quick action

Stan Jones a junior design major at Arizona State University received a $100 check from Atlantic Richfield Co. for his rapid response at Gale's Richfield Service Station 6802 E McDowell after a car hit two gas pumps causing a gasoline spill and fire. Bill to restrict young drivers with provisional licenses

In Phoenix a bill by six senators would allow provisional licenses for ages 16 to 18. Recalls possible for violations or at fault accidents, with regular licensing contingent on a satisfactory highway department record. Provisional status ends when conditions are met or violations occur.
