Arizona Would Add Wilderness Areas To National System

The Forest Service weighs adding 423,950 acres in Arizona to the National Wilderness System as part of a nationwide study of 11 million roadless acres. The proposal, led by National Forester Wirth, aims to double wilderness land with areas in Coconino Coronado Kaibab Prescott and Tonto forests including sites near Fredonia Nogales Sedona Mesa Payson Apache Junction and the Superstition Wilderness. Government officials Butz and McGuire announce the plan as a logical expansion of protections against timber cutting and other intrusions.
