Meat price debate pits farmer packer and retailer profit
In the 1973 meat shortage farmers faced protests over profits while packers and retailers defend scrapping gains. Swift publicist Roy Green notes turkey prices fell from 58.6 to 49.3 cents per pound while farmers’ earnings dropped from 53 to about 28 cents. Beef wholesale prices barely changed, but farmers’ share fell to just under 40 cents. Retailers defend slim margins and report meat prices remain a good value, though costs rose for supermarkets after wage and price controls ended.
